Immortality & Resurrection, Inc.

By Joseph P. Farrell
Just when you thought the aspirations and plans of modern science couldn’t possibly become more diabolical (or, if one prefer, sacrilegious), an article comes along to renew your hope that the world continues on its path of normalcy, and that many scientists are, indeed, just as wild-eyed-nuts as you always thought them to be. And this week, apparently many people were relieved and reassured that the mad scientist is not a thing of the past or a species that died out, but a real, living creature deserving of our awe and respect. Ms. M.W. and many others found this, and shared it, doubtless because they were concerned that I was losing hope that there were no more mad scientists:
Way back when I first started writing about these strange topics in The Giza Death Star, I made the observation that physical immortality might not be such a good thing, without a commensurate and corresponding improvement in human spirituality and morality. In this, I took my cue from an ancient Greek Church Father named St. John Chrysostom, who warned about the same thing, and who stated that it was death, in fact, that formed the crucial condition for the possibility of human repentance and a change of mind, for it cut off further progress in evil. Taking this as my cue, in the final pages of that book, I asked people to imagine if such immortality were possible, or even a dramatically extended life span were possible – both of which are now being openly discussed and touted in serious and not-so-serious literature – what it might mean for the resulting civilization? One thing that would result, I pointed out, was a vastly expanded and accelerated scientific and technological development. One individual would, in such a condition, be able to learn and to master several academic disciplines, not just one.The explosion of technology and science would dwarf anything we have seen thus far. But the other consequence would be for moral progress. Imagine, I said back then, an Albert Schweitzer having not a century, but centuries or even millennia to do good things, or, conversely, a Mao Tse-Tung, a Josif Stalin, a Pol Pot or an Adolf Hitler, having that long to “perfect their progress in evil,” and one gets a clear picture of the sharp moral contradictions such a society would be in. And please note: this problem is not a problem that, to my knowledge, is receiving anything close to the attention it needs in the transhumanism-virtual immortality community. The sole focus is on the science; if we can do it, we should do it.
Now we have this:
Bioquark, a Philadelphia-based company, announced in late 2016 that they believe brain death is not ‘irreversible’.
And now, CEO Ira Pastor has revealed they will soon be testing an unprecedented stem cell method on patients in an unidentified country in Latin America, confirming the details in the next few months.
To be declared officially dead in the majority of countries, you have to experience complete and irreversible loss of brain function, or ‘brain death’.
According to Pastor, Bioquark has developed a series of injections that can reboot the brain – and they plan to try it out on humans this year.
They have no plans to test on animals first.
The first stage, named ‘First In Human Neuro-Regeneration & Neuro-Reanimation’ was slated to be a non-randomized, single group ‘proof of concept’ study.
The team said they planned to examine individuals aged 15-65 declared brain dead from a traumatic brain injury using MRI scans, in order to look for possible signs of brain death reversal.
Specifically, they planned to break it down into three stages.
First, they would harvest stem cells from the patient’s own blood, and inject this back into their body.
Next, the patient would receive a dose of peptides injected into their spinal cord.
Finally, they would undergo a 15-day course of nerve stimulation involving lasers and median nerve stimulation to try and bring about the reversal of brain death, whilst monitoring the patients using MRI scans.
Light, chemistry, and stem cells and DNA. If one didn’t know any better, one would swear one was looking at the broad chronological progression of Genesis 1.
But I digress.
The problem here is, one notices, the almost complete avoidance of the moral question. Let’s assume the technology works and that one can, literally, resurrect the dead scientifically. And let us assume the project reaches the stage of perfection envisioned by the Russian Cosmists, like Nikolai Fedorov. The cosmists, recall, want to extend the resurrection-by-science principle to the entire history of one’s ancestors. But should this occur, then what about resurrecting people like Stalin, Mao, or Hitler? The sad truth is, some people still “revere” those twisted and murderous people as heroes. The sad truth is, some people would attempt to do it, if given the means to do so.
But there’s an even bigger problem. The entire project is predicated on the materialist assumption that “brain function equals the person.” Regular readers here know that I have never subscribed to such a view, nor have I subscribed to the view, conversely, that there is no relationship between a person’s “personhood” and the functions of their soul, which would include, of course, the functions of their will, intellect, emotions, and brain. It is, I suspect, a very complex phenomenon not neatly divided into tidy Cartesian dualisms, with numerous feedback loops between the two. This said, however, the problem arises then that the brain is not the creator of individuality, but rather, its transducer (and, if I may employ a more ancient version of the term, its traducer). Thus, the possibility arises that one might “revive” a brain, and traduce or transduce a different individual than one “recalls” being present prior to brain death. Already some psychologists have written – and published – papers suggesting that certain mental disorders such as bipolarity and schizophrenia might not be disorders in any standard sense, but rather a phenomenon where an individual is inhabiting two very different and parallel universes at the same time. In this they draw upon the many worlds hypotheses of qauntum mechanics.
In short, for my money, I have no doubt that ultimately, some sort of “scientific” resurrection technique might be possible. But I suspect it will be a Pandora’s box of spiritual phenomena which, once opened, will be difficult if not impossible to close again, and that before we open it, we should give lengthy, and due consideration to all the moral problems it will engender.
See you on the flip side…

5 Minutes of Deep Breathing Proven to Make Us More Empathetic

By Alexa Erickson
Empathy is always important, but when times are tough and caring for others is even tougher, it becomes even more essential. Because we are so often in our own bubble, with our own unique outlook on the world, it can be easy to let others’ feelings fall by the wayside. But understanding how other people experience the world is essential for not just the care of others, but our own personal development as well.
When we put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, trying to understand their experiences and perspectives, we are practicing empathy. Sometimes empathy just kicks in, serving as a natural instinct, like when we see someone crying or bleeding. But true empathy requires conscious effort.
But does it really have to take a whole lot of work? Or can practicing empathy come with a bit more ease? Researchers from the Department of Psychology at Cambridge University believe it is as simple as taking deep breaths.
According to the study, deep breaths ignite the state of interoception, or paying attention to what is happening inside your own body, and identifying other people’s emotions.
For their work, the team of researchers, from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience at the University of London, asked participants to sit quietly for a set amount of time and count their own pulse. They were not permitted to use any method for counting, other than simply sitting silently and concentrating on their heartbeats.
The participants then watched a 15-minute video about a social interaction, divided into short clips. Between each clip, they were asked questions about the mental state of one of the characters. The researchers found that the participants capable of counting their own heartbeats showed a significant association with how well they could identify other people’s emotions.
According to the researchers, such results confirm past research that has found these processes use the same portion of the brain, called the insular cortex. Such insight reveals that the body is incredibly intelligent as a whole — not just the brain. Despite consciousness often being associated with the brain, it is within all of our body’s cells. And the more consciously aware those cells become, the greater awareness we are capable of having for the external world outside of our body.
“We suggest that interoceptive training may have a beneficial impact on the real world,” concluded the study.
Along with counting your heartbeats, there are other methods of practicing interoception you can practice, such as various deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness training such as meditation.
A breathing exercise to try is retaining the breath in order to stimulate the nervous system in a way that trains the brain to relax by way of discomfort. This is called strengthening the compassion muscle.
This 20-minute guided mindfulness exercise may be of help as well:

Company to Eliminate 50% of the Pacific Garbage Patch by 2020

Twenty-year-old Boyan Slat and his company The Ocean Cleanup have announced they will be able to eliminate fifty percent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 2020.

By Derrick Broze
Utrecht, Netherlands — On Thursday, Boyan Slat, CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, discussed new information regarding his team’s efforts to remove all the plastic currently floating on the surfaces of the world’s oceans. In front of a large crowd of curious supporters, researchers, and journalists, Slat revealed that within twelve months his team will be able to launch the first operational device to begin removing plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Ocean Cleanup project was originally slated to begin in 2020, but thanks to a new design and additional funding, the team will move forward ahead of schedule.
Boyan Slat first made headlines in 2013 when he announced his plan for a netless method of cleaning up the world’s oceans. Currently, there are five massive ocean garbage patches, or subtropical gyres, where plastic concentrates and accumulates. Slat founded The Ocean Cleanup to address the problem of the garbage patches by removing the plastic before it breaks down into microplastics, as well as to encourage a reduction of the use of plastics. The company operates under the principle of working with and mimicking the patterns of nature. The project was originally envisioned as large U-shaped screens that use the waves and currents of the ocean to pull in the plastic junk to a central point. Slat described the project as a sort of “plastic magnet.” This technology eliminates the need for large fishing nets, which are often left in the ocean and end up becoming “ghost nets.” The best part is the circular nature of the project; all of the extracted plastic will be collected and recycled.
Boyan Slat excitedly announced changes to his original plans, stating that new developments have led to the creation of a “modular” cleanup system consisting of screens and floating anchors. At the end of his presentation, Slat unveiled four 40-foot high anchors that will work with the floating screens to collect plastic. The Ocean Cleanup is now slated to test the first system off the west coast of the United States by the end of 2017. The first deployment to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch will come in the first half of 2018.
The launch date was also moved up due to a successful funding round, which has raised 21.7 million dollars in donations since November 2016. This brings the total funding to $31.5 million since 2013. The Ocean Cleanup project has continued to receive support from members of the public, as well as private institutions since their founding. This may be due, in part, to the fact that Slat and his crew have continuously provided updates to their supporters and achieved several milestones on their path to cleaning the oceans. For example, in June 2016, The Ocean Cleanup deployed a 100-meter segment in the North Sea off the coast of The Netherlands. This marked the first real world testing of the barrier design. The Ocean Cleanup team also launched a series of reconnaissance flights in order to study the plastic problem.
At The Ocean Cleanup we are always looking for ways to make the cleanup faster, better and cheaper,” Slat stated. “Today is another important day in moving in that direction. The cleanup of the world’s oceans is just around the corner.”
Boyan Slat is a young genius and a great reminder of the potential that lies within each of us. His work and the work of everyone at The Ocean Cleanup has inspired 31 million dollars in donations. The successful funding of this project is also a beautiful reminder that the people do not need the State in order to solve the problems of the world. Public support and funding from private individuals and organizations can inspire innovation and lead to a healthier, freer world.

This Man Single-Handedly Planted A Forest Bigger Than Central Park

By Anna LeMind
In the northwest corner of India lies a special island surrounded by the Brahmaputra River. What’ makes it special is the fact that it is the largest river island in the world. Majuli is home to 150,000 people and the location of a 1,360-acre forest, but sadly, it’s the victim of erosion – and I mean years of damage. Even though flooding and erosion affects other areas, such as the mainland of Jorhat, erosion could possibly dissolve the island of Majuli, in no time.
The people of Majuli have lost homes because of the rising waters – homes and temples. It’s tragic, seeing as some of the temples located on Majuli are around 250 years old. Within five years, temples located just 200 kilometers from the river bank will also be gone.

The Forest Man

But there is hope for Majuli. A 1,360-acre forest, called Molai, could be just the thing to stop the erosion. Planted since the 70s, the Molai forest was nurtured by Jadav Payeng, one tree at a time, until it now is bigger than Central park! Although half of the island has already eroded away, thousands of trees and bamboo now hold fast some remaining acres. And all this was done single handed, by the forest man!
Because of this man’s efforts, endangered species, such as Bengal tigers, elephants and vultures, have returned to the island. Other species of animals thrive as well, along with plants and various vegetation. Acres of roots crawl deep into the ground, anchoring Majuli.
Jadav Payeng has been recognized for this endeavors too. The former president of India, A.P. J. Abdul Kalam, was the one who gave him the name “Forest Man of India”. This recognition came after a short film was made by photographer Jitu Kalita and a series of articles circulated the globe. Payeng had become a hero to his people and his home.

His efforts continue

The forest man continues to plant trees with the help of his family. And the planting is much easier than when he started, having seeds from established trees to grow more. Imagine, if one person can create such change, how much 5 or 10 people could do, if they only joined in the Forest man’s quest to halt flood and erosion from destroying Majuli. In fact, re-forestation could make a monumental difference all along the banks of the Brahmaputra River in India.
In the words of Payeng,
I am just a simple man. There are many just like me.”
Simply said and filled with promise for our planet, wouldn’t you say? Jadav Payeng will continue his work until he can do it no longer. I personally hope that his children will continue his legacy for saving Majuli. I also hope that the forest man can be an inspiration for us all. Each one of us can make a world of a difference. Especially when it’s our world that is at stake.
What can you do for your planet?

It Works: New Study Outlines What Meditation, Yoga, & Prayer Can Do To The Human Body

By Arjun Walia
The medicinal benefits of meditation and yoga are now firmly established in scientific literature. One of the latest studies to emerge on the matter comes from Harvard researchers working at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). They determined that meditation literally rebuilds the brain’s grey matter in just eight weeks. It’s the very first study to document that meditation produces changes over time in the brain’s grey matter. (1)
Another promising study has recently come out of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). These researchers conducted the very first study where the use of the “relaxation response”was examined in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and the first to investigate the genomic effects of the relaxation response in individuals with any disorder. The report was published in the journal PLOS-ONE. (source)
When it comes to ‘prayer’ or ‘distant healing’ — directing human attention on physical systems — significant results have been obtained that warrant further investigation. For a selected list of downloadable peer-reviewed journal articles reporting studies of psychic phenomena, mostly published in the 21st century, you can click HERE.
Scientists over at the HeartMath Institute have demonstrated that when a person is feeling really good, and is full of positive emotions like love, gratitude, and appreciation, their heart beats out a different message that’s encoded in its electromagnetic field, which in turn has positive health effects on their body overall. You can read more about that here.
Factors associated with human consciousness (thoughts, feelings, emotions, perception, intention) have long been studied to see how they affect and interact with our physical world. You can read more about that here.

The Power Of Meditation, Yoga, & Prayer on Human Health

Meditation, yoga, and prayer are all grouped into a category (in medical terms) called ‘relaxation-response techniques.’ These techniques have been subject to several studies which clearly show that regular practice directly affects physiologic factors such as heart rate, blood pressure, stress, anxiety, oxygen consumption, and more. It was first described over 40 years ago by Herbert Benson, Director Emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute and co-author of the paper presented in this article.
The new study, out of the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, from the Institute for Technology Assessment and the Benson-Henry Institute (BHI) for Mind Body Medicine, found that people participating in the ‘relaxation-response program’ actually used fewer health care services in the year after their participation, compared to how many they used the previous year.
The Harvard gazette reports that relaxation response techniques, such as meditation, yoga, and prayer, could reduce the need for health care services by 43 percent.
“Our study’s primary finding is that programs that train patients to elicit the relaxation response — specifically those taught at the BHI — can also dramatically reduce health care utilization. . . . These programs promote wellness and, in our environment of constrained health care resources, could potentially ease the burden on our health delivery systems at minimal cost and at no real risk.” – James E. Stahl, lead author of the study
The study was published last Tuesday in the journal PLOS ONE.
So, how did the research team analyze the impact of mind-body interventions on modern day medical techniques? They gathered data on people who have been participating in the BHI Relaxation Response Resiliency Program for the past eight years. After analyzing more than four thousands participants, and comparing it with a control group of almost fourteen thousand (while also taking other factors into consideration — read the study for more), the participants engaging in the relationship program displayed an average reduction of 43 percent when it came to using their regular health care services over the year after their participation in the project.
I think of it this way: There are many gates to wellness, but not everyone is ready to walk through a particular gate at a given time. From a public health perspective, it is better to be prepared to offer these tools to people in their customary settings than to wait for them to seek out these interventions. For that reason, we feel that mind-body interventions — which are both low-cost and essentially risk-free — should perhaps be incorporated into regular preventive care.” – Herbert Benson, founder and director emeritus of the BHI and co-author of this current study

Meditation/Yoga Prayer Techniques

Personally, I believe a common misconception about meditation is that it must be done in a special way, or you must sit in a certain position. All you have to do is place yourself in a position that is most comfortable for you and focus on your breath, in and out. It’s not about trying to empty your mind, it’s about more so about developing a “non-judgemental awareness of sensations, feelings and state of mind” (source). Let your thoughts and feelings come and go, then return your focus to your breathe. Telling yourself not to think will only produce the opposite effect, but you can work on choosing how to feel and respond to those thoughts. Meditation can be similar to state of mind, in that some might have the ability to produce the same brainwave frequencies that are commonly seen in meditators without actually meditating. On the other hand, there are many devout students of meditation who spend hours of their time each day devoted to this ancient practice.
If you are someone who doesn’t have much experience with meditation and would like to try it, you can check out some of our articles on the topic that offer some advice/tips on meditation, as well as find some guided meditations here.
As far as yoga goes, here is a 20 minute yoga class for complete beginners, and here is a list of articles we’ve written that provide more instruction and information about yoga.

Proof Of Reincarnation? This Boy Can Remember Specific Details About His Previous Life As A Woman, Named Pam

(Collective Evolution) Do you believe in reincarnation? Is it something that happens to our soul when we die? Do we move onto another life in a different physicality and continue our evolution as souls?
There are many different perspectives and opinions on this. There are also many religions based entirely around this concept, and amazingly enough, a lot of evidence that can directly support this theory.
Take Luke for example, a little boy who vividly remembers what appears to be a past life as a woman who died in the 70’s named, Pam.
“We shouldn’t define the soul by race or gender.”
Watch the video below to heard about Luke’s story.

Further Evidence About Reincarnation

Interestingly enough, this is not the first time that this has occurred. There are many children and adults worldwide who claim to remember their past lives. Sure, you could dismiss some of these quite easily as there is no real proof, but what about the others? What about the instances such as Luke’s who can remember such specific details about his former life that he would not have been able to know otherwise? Here is a link for another story about a little boy who remembers so much of his past life as a World War II pilot that he actually gets reunited with his sister! There are just too many details that this boy would have had no way of knowing had he not lived the life that he describes.
Is it possible that this is coincidence? Well, maybe, if you believe in coincidence…
It does seem that these occurrences tend to happen more often to children. Is it because as children, it is closer to the time when they were alive in the past, so the memory of their former lives is more predominant? It seems often that children will try to tell us things that we perceive as nonsense, but what if we were to really start listening to them and make a real attempt to understand what they are trying to tell us?
If you have young children, after reading this you may be prompted to ask your children about their previous past lives and see what they say – the answer just might surprise you! Please feel free to share any stories in the comment section below!
